It is not uncommon to feel tingling in the foot after adopting a seated position where the nerves are compressed (like crossing the legs), or after wearing shoes that are too tight. On the other hand, if the symptoms persist or appear in an unexplained way, they can be the sign of an underlying pathology.
Several conditions can reproduce paresthesias in the lower limb. They can be of lumbar, vascular, metabolic origin, etc. The discomfort can be felt in the whole leg, below the knee, or in different areas of the foot.
In this article, we look at some of the causes why you might experience tingling in the foot (including serious ones), as well as the management to reduce the symptoms.
Definition
The tingling may be accompanied by other symptoms at the same time or intermittently. We think, for example, of numbness, tingling, burning sensation, itching, etc. They can occur anywhere in the body, but are more common in the extremities (hands and feet)
Causes of tingling in the foot
Medical conditions that can cause tingling in the foot include the following:
Lumbar injury
Any injury to the lower back can irritate the nerve roots that originate from the spine and provide nerve conduction to the foot. As these nerves are responsible for providing sensation to the lower extremities, irritation there can cause tingling in the foot.
Conditions that can reproduce paresthesias include:
- Herniated disc
- Sciatica
- Cruralgia
- Narrow lumbar canal (video explanation)
- Spondylolisthesis
- Degenerative disc disease (video explanation)
- Etc
Peripheral neuropathy
La neuropathy is characterized by disease or dysfunction of one (or more) nerves. These can be motor and/or sensory.
Besides the nerve sciatica, any damage to a peripheral nerve in the lower limb can also cause tingling in the foot. Symptoms may also manifest as electric shock-like pain, tingling, tingling, numbness, weakness and even paralysis in some severe cases.
Diabetes
Diabetes is one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy (nearly 30% of cases). Paresthesias usually develop in both feet initially, then move up the legs and then affect the upper limbs. In fact, these symptoms are often the first signs of diabetes.
Trauma
Nerves can be irritated, compressed or cut outright by trauma such as a car accident, sports injury or frostbite. In addition to pain, paresthesias such as tingling in the foot may result.
Systemic disease
These include kidney disorders, liver disease, vascular damage, connective tissue disorders, inflammatory diseases, hormonal imbalances, as well as tumors that affect nerve conduction.
Vitamin deficiency
Vitamins E, B1, B6, B12 and niacin are necessary for healthy nerves. A B12 deficiency, for example, can lead to pernicious anemia (Biermer's anemia), an important cause of peripheral neuropathy. Conversely, excess B6 can also cause tingling in the hands and feet.
Alcoholism or chronic alcohol abuse
Alcoholics are more likely to lack thiamin or other important vitamins due to poor dietary habits. Additionally, excess alcohol by itself can cause nerve damage; this condition is called alcoholic neuropathy.
Infections
These include Lyme disease, shingles, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr disease, herpes simplex, HIV, etc.
Autoimmune diseases
These include chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
Diagnostic
To better understand the origin of tingling in the foot, the doctor will typically start with a medical history where he will ask you questions about your symptoms, your medical history, your work environment, your eating and social habits, etc.
A physical examination (including a neurological examination complete) will accompany the anamnesis, and will allow the health professional to clarify the diagnosis.
In addition to the physical assessment in the office, several tests can be carried out to better identify the exact cause of tingling in the foot:
- medical imaging (MRI, scanner, etc.)
- blood test
- electromyogram (EMG)
- cerebrospinal fluid examination
- nerve biopsy
When to worry
Tingling in the foot that comes on suddenly and is accompanied by other unusual symptoms can be a cause for concern, although usually of benign cause. It is therefore important to consult as soon as possible when foot paresthesias are associated with the following symptoms:
- confusion
- difficulty speaking
- dizziness
- loss of bladder control (incontinence) – possible cauda equina syndrome
- sudden onset tingling and numbness that spreads
- severe headaches
- difficulty breathing
The symptoms mentioned above are sometimes signs of a more serious condition such as an epileptic seizure, a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) or a transient ischemic attack.
In addition, it is important to consult a doctor if the tingling in the foot is the cause of loss of balance or falls. This is especially true in diabetic patients, where metabolic changes can cause nerve damage responsible for the symptoms.
In short, it is important to consult as soon as there is the appearance of tingling unrelated to postural habits, which persists over time or becomes recurrent, and which is accompanied by any unusual change.
Treatment
The success of the treatment will depend on several factors including the severity of the symptoms, the precise cause of the tingling, etc. The following modalities will generally be prescribed and adapted according to each individual:
Repos
Tingling in the foot frequently comes from unusual posture or prolonged nerve pressure. In this case, the simple fact of changing position or resting the leg allows the elimination of the symptoms.
Medication
Medication options for long-term lower extremity tingling relief include:
- Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants have been approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia.
- Corticosteroids: Certain corticosteroids can help reduce the chronic inflammation and numbness associated with diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
- Gabapentin and pregabalin: These medications can help reduce tingling if it comes from nerve damage.
Ice and heat
If nerve pressure is causing the paresthesias, applying ice can help reduce the inflammation responsible for the symptoms. Heat, on the other hand, can help relax tight muscles and indirectly release nerve pressure in some cases.
On the other hand, the excessive application of these modalities can cause symptoms of tingling or numbness. To learn all about heat and ice (and how to apply them safely), see the following article.

Massage
In the presence of tingling of mechanical origin, massaging the legs and feet can help relieve the symptoms. This would come from muscle relaxation, optimization of blood circulation and a modification of the sensory message sent to the central nervous system (Portillon theory).
The ideal will be to consult a qualified practitioner (such as an osteopath or masseur-physiotherapist). He will know how to use manual therapy techniques aimed at releasing tense muscles and relieving symptoms.
In some cases, it is also possible to self-treat using accessories. If the tingling is of mechanical or muscular origin, you may see an improvement in your condition by trying the following products (with recommendations):

Exercise
Physical exercise has many health benefits. The practice of a dosed and progressive physical activity could in particular help to reduce tingling in the foot by increasing the ability of the heart to pump blood to the legs, by reducing nerve sensitivity, or by reducing inflammation.
Also, muscle strengthening of the leg muscles would reduce the risk of falling sometimes associated with paresthesias of the lower limbs. This is all the more relevant in the geriatric population.
Mental techniques and stress reduction
Although the cause of tingling in the foot is often physical, it is possible that psychological factors (such as stress or anxiety) can make the symptoms worse.
In this perspective, breathing techniques or meditation (like mindfulness) will create a relaxing environment. This stress reduction will act at the same time on the central nervous system by desensitizing the brain to pain or other symptoms such as paresthesias.
Some props are also used to calm stress and anxiety. Although they are not supported by solid scientific evidence, many people observe positive changes using the following products (with recommendations):

Healthy and balanced diet
Malnutrition, especially vitamin B deficiencies, can cause nerve damage resulting in tingling or numbness. Thus, an adequate intake of vitamins and other nutrients is to be encouraged.
In addition, certain foods would increase the level of inflammation in the body, which could lead to the development of paresthesias. Betting on anti-inflammatory foods will therefore help relieve symptoms, in addition to controlling excess weight, which increases stress on joints and nerves.
Reduce or avoid alcohol consumption
Alcohol contains toxins that can cause nerve damage. Additionally, alcohol typically worsens symptoms of chronic pain and inflammatory conditions, and can even cause symptom flare-ups. Limiting its use could therefore be beneficial in reducing tingling in the foot.
Alternative medicine
Although it does not have solid scientific evidence, many people use techniques from alternative medicine to relieve their tingling. The following modalities are often used:
- acupuncture
- acupressure mat
- suction cup
- Epsom salt baths
- essential oils
- natural products
- etc.
What about natural remedies?

- Omega-3s : Omega-3 are polyunsaturated fatty acids that play a very important role in the functioning of our body. They are provided by food in three natural forms: docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), alpha linolenic acid (ALA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Beyond their action on the brain and the cardiovascular system, omega-3s prove very effective against inflammation. Indeed, they have the ability to act on the inflammatory mechanisms in osteoarthritis by slowing down cartilage destruction, thus they reduce the intensity of osteoarthritis pain. Since sciatica is most often linked to inflammation secondary to a herniated disc, it can also respond to omega-3s if you consume them regularly.
